Playing catch up
Rather than belaboring the obvious lack of content, let's play some catch-up. Melissa and I took the kids to Indianapolis for the Children's Museum and the city zoo in late April. We had a good time, it's only two hours of driving and we had great weather. The kids each turned a year older this summer, Ian two in June and Megan six three weeks later in July. I accepted a new job on Megan's birthday, moving out of my comfort zone for the first time in years. I haven't been too sure if I did the right thing taking this job, but as the weeks go by and I grow more comfortable in the new position I'm leaning more and more toward being happy that I moved. The new company had a picnic for its employees today at Rollandia, and the kids had a great time playing; Megan and mom won the water balloon fight against myself and Ian, though my little helper was more entertained by throwing our ammo onto the ground than at the other team.
Melissa and I had our 17th anniversary a month ago, and caught the latest Harry Potter movie and dinner while my mom kept the kids overnight. We just watched 17 Again via Movies on Demand tonight since, as usual, nothing worth watching was on HBO or any of the other cable channels.
I recently finished the latest Malazan book by Steven Erikson, another 1200-page beast. Working on the latest Witcher translation since I'm such a huge fan of the computer game. And speaking of reading, had an eye exam a few weeks ago and need to pick up my new reading glasses tomorrow. Growing old is so much fun, but hopefully these help me read at night. My Lord of the Rings: Online time has been steadily decreasing as time passes, so I'm hoping to pick up on my reading again and whittle away at that stack of unread books.
We had Labor Day dinner at my mom's last Sunday a day early, eating her chicken and broccoli dish that she's made for decades. Poor Ian got eaten alive by mosquitos outside, with the bumps still showing on his forehead a week later.
Megan started kindergarten at a charter school, Pathways, two weeks ago. Her bus picks her up at 7:25am and drops her back off at 3:40, so it's a full day for her. She held my hand on the first morning as we walked down to the corner to wait on the bus, and I couldn't help but rememeber doing the same on Dorchester so many years ago. . .waiting for the bus regardless of the weather, hanging out with the neighborhood kids.
We managed to lock ourselves out of our own house tonight as mom and Jerry were leaving after a short visit to see the kids. Sat outside for probably a good hour and a half before a locksmith showed up to burglar our garage door and let us in (for a fee of $58).
